چکیده

Methaemoglobinaemia is a rarely diagnosed, life-threatening pathology and involves the presence of more than 1% of oxidised haemoglobin in the blood that is unable to carry oxygen. We report the case of a 49-year-old male who developed fulminant symptoms of acute hypoxaemic respiratory failure and in whom acute and chronic cardiovascular and respiratory conditions had been ruled out. The discrepancy between oxygen saturation determined by pulse oximetry and oxygen saturation and oxygen partial pressure determined by capillary blood gas analysis, as well as the evident lack of response to oxygen therapy, were important indicators suggestive of a haemoglobinopathy and the diagnosis of methaemoglobinaemia. His methaemoglobin level was 16%. The symptoms resolved spontaneously and the causative factor was not identified.

Congenital methaemoglobinaemia: a rare cause of cyanosis in an adult patient.

Cyanosis is a physical finding that can occur at any age but presents a great challenge as the causes are multiple and varied. When patients present with cyanosis and dyspnoea that are unrelated to cardiopulmonary causes, methaemoglobinaemia should be considered as a possible diagnosis although rare. Methaemoglobinaemia can be asymptomatic even when methaemoglobin (metHb) levels are as high as ...

Methaemoglobinaemia and renal failure following mesalazine for treatment of inflammatory bowel disease.

We report the first case of methaemoglobinaemia induced by mesalazine. A woman suffering diarrhea and abdominal pain was initially treated with sulfamethoxazole–trimethoprim (TMP–SMX) and metronidazole for suspected infectious colitis. The treatment was stopped after ten days and she was referred to a gastroenterologist. A colonoscopy showed features resembling inflammatory bowel disease. Histo...

Acute severe methemoglobinaemia is an uncommon but life-threatening condition caused by a variety of oxidizing agents commonly used in both health care and industrial settings. Thus, recognition is important as it is readily treatable. The oxygen transport is compromised as a result of abnormal levels of oxidized haemoglobin, and this leads to skin discolouration and a variety of symptoms. Diag...

Methaemoglobinaemia after ingestion of amyl nitrite.

We report a case of methaemoglobinaemia in a 2 year old girl after ingestion of an 'aphrodisiac' containing nitrite. The availability of these products, their poor labelling, and their intended presence in domestic bedrooms all serve to increase the hazard they pose to young children.
